Water Snake Year 201

Gui Si – Yin Water Snake Year
Feb. 3, 2013 (08:14 PST) – Feb. 3, 2014 (14:04 PST)

The Water Snake Year which begins on Feb 4 in the Chinese Solar Calendar. The Chinese Solar Calendar is used for the purposes of Chinese Metaphysics. Feb 10, under the Lunar calendar is the beginning of the Chinese New Year Holiday celebration.

The Year of the Snake, 2013, in the Chinese calendar is characterized by the elements of Yin Water sitting on top of Yang Fire. The Chinese calendar is derived from the 5 elements or the 5 Energy Phases. This comprises the Yin and Yang elements of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water, totaling 10 elements in total. The Yin and Yang of each element represents opposite polarities.

The birth and destruction cycles of the 5 Energy Phases, governs the inter-relationship between the elements. In this cycle, water is the destructive to fire. As such, the Water Snake is in a conflict relationship because it is in a destructive cycle.

Hidden in the Snake with Yang Fire, is the birth of Yang Metal, which equates to weapons or government. Fire and Metal are also in a conflictual or combustible relationship.

The 5 Elements or 5 Energy Phases

These conflictual relationships may result in an absence of peace. Each animal in the Chinese Astrology has a month like the 12 western astrological signs.

The Snake begins in May in the western calendar. This is when fire energy begins to peak in the summer month of June. Fire rising with hidden metal (weapons) implies changes, transformation on the milder side. And, social unrest, uprisings, and even revolution on the other. Hence, we can anticipate international conflicts,  clashing and a fight over power in 2013. With governments or the military playing an active role.

Disasters and calamities happen all the time in all parts of the World…….as my Sifu/Shifu Master Joseph Yu once said; they can be natural and/or man-made. Chinese metaphysical studies can be utilized for forecasting, but just like the weather, nothing is absolute. Since everything within our Universe is connected, we can make predictions, but the accuracy is dependent upon so many factors, which can be summarized in the following classic stanza from ancient China:
  1. Destiny– Destiny
  2. Fate – Fate
  3. Feng Shui – Feng Shui
  4. Karma / Accumulate good deeds. – Karma/Accumulate good deeds
  5. Education / Studies – Education/Studies
  6. Name – Name
  7. Physiognomy – Physiognomy
  8. Respect for the gods / higher intelligence – Respect for the gods/higher intelligence
  9. Befriend honorable people – Befriend honorable people
  10. Self cultivation – Self cultivation
  11. Good Choice of career and spouse – Good choice of career and spouse
  12. Welcome the auspicious and avoid the inauspicious – Welcome the auspicious and avoid the inauspicious
For Destiny & Fate, we can gather the information from our destiny charts; Feng Shui of course is the study of what is within our environment, and the rest is dependent upon our own choice and action in everyday life, at different points in time and space, in order to make the most of the Balance and Harmony between the San Cai or Three Powers = Heaven, Man and Earth.
For the upcoming Gui Si year – Yin Water sitting on top of Snake – which comprises of Yang Fire, Yang Earth and Yang Metal………will be another year of changes within the different governments, organizations and authorities. Within the home front, that will be the head of the family. The element of Yin Water is not strong in this Snake year, which is likened to a gentle rising mist upon the mountains. Any resulting action and changes will be more profound.
Since the Snake clashes with the Pig in the Four Pillars of Destiny analysis, people who have the Pig in their destiny charts will expect some upheavals in their lives for this year. And for people who were born in the previous Gui Si year (1953), some major changes in life can be mitigated by their own positive action, changes and attitude this year. Of course good Feng Shui in their environment will have a positive impact.
For more detailed look at the effects of the Yin Water Snake on each person, we need to look at the individual’s Four Pillars of Destiny Chart – based on the year, month, day, hour and place of birth, in order to fully analyze the implication upon each individual’s life within this solar year. The most important factor is each individual’s Day Master, the Yang Element present on the day you were born.To find out the Elements in your personal Four Pillars chart, click here:

It is instructive to review major events in the previous Water Snake Year 1953. Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower was inaugurated President of United States. Joseph Stalin diedGeorgi Malenkov became the Soviet premier; East Berliners rose against Communist rule; quelled by tanks. Egypt became a republic ruled by military junta. Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were executed in Sing Sing prison for espionage. The Korean armistice was signed. Moscow announced explosion of the hydrogen bomb.

It was a year of innovative endeavors and ideas: James Watson and Francis Crick publish their discovery of the molecular model of DNA. Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay of Nepal reach top of Mt. Everest. James Watson, Francis Crick, and Rosalind Franklin discovered the structure of DNA. Ernest Hemingway won the Pulitzer for The Old Man and the Sea.

Morning Dew

Yin water is the most yin element of the ten elements. It is likened to the morning mist or drizzling rain. Thus the year will exhibit a gentleness, moderation, patience, humility, flexibility and tolerance, especially in the autumn and winter months. Conversely, yin water has the capacity for subterfuge, concealment, deviousness. Like mist, it can penetrate everywhere.

As such, any conflict may be less intense than some Snake years like the 911 attack in 2001 and Pearl Harbor Attack in 1949.

Having awareness, the energy of the year can be harnessed in positive direction. With creativity and intelligence we can see new and innovative ideas, reforms and positive transformation. Or, the energy can be used toward intrigue, secrecy, cheating, terrorist attacks or assassinations. The fire under the water is in an “uprising” process with a hidden metal. This hidden fire is considered mystical, unpredictable and duplicitous.

In Chinese medicine, yin water is related to the kidney, ears and sexual organs. In regards to industry, Fire is related to the entertainment and hospitality industries, sports, marketing, broadcasting and social media. Resulting in a year of romance and prosperity to industries related to glamour, entertainment, hospitality and marketing. In Water Snake year 1953, Playboy magazine hit newsstands. A nude Marilyn Monroe graced the cover.
